Track 6 The Tassie Tunes
Australian traditional. Julie Gittus: fiddle; Dave Gittus: button accordion
These are Dave's and Julie's variations of two mazurkas learnt from Real Island Roots, a CD comprising of traditional Tassie tunes as played by Steve Gadd and Marjorie Hearn. The first tune is the Albert Hall polka mazurka, and the melody is reminiscent of an old English nursery rhyme based on the peal of church bells: Oranges and Lemons, say the Bells of St Clements.
Born in Tassie, Dave spent years living in the Mount Wellington foothills with his own Uncle Lyall, a box player. Although the second tune, Lyall's Mazurka, isn't attributable to Dave's Uncle Lyall, playing the tune is a reminder of that big-hearted Tassie bloke and his shiny red button accordion. The set finishes with a reprise of Albert Hall polka mazurka.
