Australian traditional. Dave Gittus: button accordion; Julie Gittus: fiddle; Ian White: banjo
The first waltz, Spookendykes, is a Dave de Hugard arrangement of two variations of this tune as collected from NSW traditional players, George Davis and Mick Pilley by John Meredith. Spookendyke was a German miner & traditional player in the Mudgee area. He was also known as 'Strike-a-light' by the other miners. Dave & Julie first heard de Hugard playing this sublime arrangement at the Guildford folk club. In typical folk style, they altered a few high notes to make it easier to play.
Fellow musician Jane Nankivell (concertina player from the Northern Territory) suggested Bill Large's second waltz would sit well with Spookendyke's. Bill Large was a traditional player also from the Mudgee area. Bill was recorded playing this waltz using wax cylinder technology in 1911.
